Monday Ice: Von

A quirky little video from Atli Þór Einarsson made during his time at the Icelandic Film School.  I like the soundtrack and there is something evocative about it that I enjoy.

Monday Ice: Social Innovation

An interesting set of interviews with various companies/people in Iceland on social innovation.
From my experience here I totally agree with the opening statement of Árdís Ármannsdóttir from the Innovation Center of Iceland that Icelanders do not see things normally as hindrances or problems but in a more positive, solution type way.

Monday Ice: Bárðarbunga

We fly out tomorrow for my daughter's wedding in Santorini and so have been watching the on again, off again, on again antics of the Bárðarbunga volcano. Our fingers have been crossed that our flights are not disrupted, so far so good.  You can see the live web cam here.

source - Iceland Review

Wondering how to pronounce it, not quite as hard as the last one.

This song apparently was recorded just a week before the eruption happened between Dyngjujökull and Bárðarbunga.

Monday Ice: How do you like Iceland - Part 2

I am enjoying this little documentary, don't agree with all the comments but some are spot on.

Monday Ice: How do you like Iceland?

A group of foreigners are asked about Iceland, quite funny in parts.  The film was shot in 2004 - so before the crash.  This is only part 1 of 6, I will share the rest in coming weeks.

Monday Ice: Dóttir

A gorgeous video created by Australian Donna Maree Robinson, an artist who stayed with her daughter Abbey at the Nes Art Residency for 2 months during winter.  A lovely duo, both who revelled in and made the most of their time in Skagaströnd amongst the snow and ice. Donna currently has an exhibition on in Mackay Queensland titled Far Away Here which was inspired by her residency at Nes.

Monday Ice: Dinner and Song

I am constantly amazed how many Icelanders sing...maybe that is their secret to happiness.
Edward Getley is entertained after dinner by his hosts on Westman Island.

Monday Ice: Grímsey

This is a delightful video of Grímsey Island situated just inside the Arctic circle and made all the more lovely by the young family singing one of my very favourite songs.

Monday Ice: No Human Being is Illegal

I watch from a distance in disgust how Australia treats asylum seekers and there is also some question here in Iceland about the treatment of refugees and how long it takes to process their applications, although I doubt it is to the same degree of degradation that the current Australian govt imposes on refugees.

There has been a positive move forward here in the last few days with the Icelandic govt promising to shorten processing of applications to 90 days plus they signed a contract between the ministry and the Icelandic Red Cross on services to asylum seekers.  The Red Cross will oversee and constantly assess conditions, regularly visit and provide social services.  This is a move in the right direction.

Monday Ice: Puffin magic

This lovely little video was filmed on the Látrabjarg Peninsula in the west fjords, however here in Skagafjorður we have our very own nesting rock,  Drangey island where the Puffin flock to during summer and I think I read somewhere last year that Drangey had the most Puffins returning to their burrows in Iceland, in many other areas the numbers were significantly diminished.

Monday Ice: Mottu Mars

It is Mottumars, the time when facial hair on men is exalted,  known as movember elsewhere, money here is raised for cancer research...and in Iceland of course you must have singing!

Monday Ice: The Weight of Mountains

The main impetus for moving here, the instigator of my desire was the draw of the mountains. They physically, psychologically and spiritually affect me and I adore living amongst them.

Over the past few months I have been involved and working with the NES Artist Residency which is situated in the next town a 45 - 1.15 minute drive away, the route taken dependant on the vagaries of the weather. During the last 3 months the NES residency has been focused on film with 10 international film-makers spending the winter in Skagaströnd and creating a response to the theme "The Weight of Mountains", the town and the Icelandic environment.

One of the artists of the residency Temujin Doran from Britain has made a stunningly beautiful, poetic and informative film titled "The Weight of Mountains"...Tem's website is also worthy of lengthy perusal.  Enjoy!

Monday Ice: Snowtime

So far this winter we have had very little snow in Sauðárkrókur, it falls elsewhere in the country but just bypasses us.  In the east the last couple of days they have had a fair bit, so much so that one of the road tunnel entrances between Oddsskarði and Eskifjarður was blocked.

It has not really snowed in town here since xmas, so am missing the snowflakes a little!

Monday Ice: Sea Swimming

Here is the first in a new video series by the Reykjavik Grapevine.  A lovely little look at  sea swimming with a mid winter dip in Fossvogur Bay.  Something I have yet to try?
