Gleðilegt sumar...winter is dead!

I was chatting to a techie support for setting up my own .is domain and after our conversation was over he signed off with Gleðilegt sumar...winter is dead!

When the flags are out I always know Iceland is celebrating something!

Today is officially the first day of summer in Iceland and a national public holiday to boot.  I have certainly noticed how the weather and seasons seem to have a noticeable affect on everyone.  The extended light hours seems to boost spirits and brings many out of doors, children play outside until dark....which currently is around 10pm.  People are sprucing up their gardens and outdoor areas and certainly up and about earlier than usual.

Apparently summer is here, even if it is only 5°

It truly is a beautiful day,

cloudless blue skies,

 the water is still

with only just the slightest hint of a breeze.

There are still a few patches

 of ice lingering

but its days are numbered...winter is dead!

On this first day of summer the sun is streaming down on this little town,
time to drag a chair out on my balcony so I can soak up a little more vitamin D.

Last year summer gave Iceland only a fleeting visit but if this warm bright day is an omen...perhaps this year it will hang around a little longer.
